Tornesi: a family which is indissolubly linked to the Montalcino’s history

From generation to generation the love and the passion for Montalcino’s land and traditions

The Tornesi family is the owner of the eponymous winery since 1865. This family has always been dedicated with passion and love to the wine-making process. The first step towards the current production happened in 1967, when Gino Tornesi registered his vineyards to the newborn Consorzio of the Brunello di Montalcino, becoming one of its founding members. Today the company is guided by Maurizio who is sided by his daughter Elisa.

The estate’s lands are divided in two different plots, which are located at two different altitudes, the first at 300 meters above sea level with a southern exposure and the second at 600 meters above sea level with a south-western exposure.

Both plots have a very favourable microclimate which is so also because of its nearness to the sea and to the Amiata Mount. The soil is mainly composed by marl and stone, which favours a good drainage of the rainwater. The winery has willingly kept a part of vineyard in terraces which were customary in Tuscany and the grapes farmed are exclusively Sangiovese Grosso’s grapes which are called Brunello here in Montalcino.

The vineyards are farmed without the use of herbicides and with organic fertilisers; the majority of the work in the cellar as well as in the vineyard is handmade, respecting the territory and the people.

In 2009 the winery opened a new cellar, which was built from scratch with locally sourced materials, respecting the tradition in order to reduce to a minimum the impact on the surrounding landscape.

The cellar is equipped with all the supplies and it also hosts a tasting room and a charming panoramic terrace, from which it is possibile to admire the amazing sight on the Orcia Valley and the Amiata mount while tasting the wines by Tornesi.
